Free AI startup setup guide

You do not need a long business plan before you begin. You need a clear customer, a real problem to investigate and a sensible order for the work.

This short guide covers how to use AI as a practical assistant while keeping important decisions and customer conversations in your hands.

1. Start with a customer and a problem

Describe one type of customer and a situation they want to improve. Ask an AI assistant to list the assumptions hidden in your idea. Separate what you have observed from what you are guessing.

Use AI to prepare open interview questions, then speak to people yourself. Ask what they do now and about the last time the problem came up. Avoid asking whether they would use an idea you have already pitched. Do not paste identifiable or confidential information into an AI tool unless you have checked that it is appropriate.

2. Shape an offer you can test

Once you have some evidence, ask AI to help describe a small offer: who it is for, what result it aims to deliver, what is included and what remains uncertain.

Choose one test before building the full product. That might be a handful of customer interviews, a simple page, a waitlist or a clearly described paid pilot. Decide what evidence would make you continue, change the offer or stop.

3. Build the smallest useful product

Ask what the simplest workflow is that helps one customer reach one outcome. Make a list of what is essential now and what can wait. A prototype can help someone react to an idea, but it is not automatically secure, reliable or ready for real customer data.

Before launch, check access control, backups, costs, privacy and how you will handle support. Keep development and live systems separate where appropriate, and never put passwords or API keys in public code.

4. Give AI a defined job

AI can help draft, compare, organise and explain. It cannot validate demand or take responsibility for a business decision. Give it relevant context, constraints and a specific task. Ask it to label assumptions, show uncertainty and say what needs checking.

Prompt to adapt:

I am exploring [idea] for [customer]. The problem I have observed is [problem]. What I know from real conversations is [evidence]. My constraints are [time, budget, skills]. Help me [specific task]. Separate facts from assumptions. Ask questions before filling gaps. Do not invent research, customer quotes or results.

Check important claims against reliable sources. Keep the original notes and review AI summaries against them.

5. Plan a useful launch routine

Collect questions your intended customers actually ask. Use AI to outline and adapt helpful answers, then check every factual claim and rewrite the draft in your own voice. A scheduler such as Buffer can help plan a manageable rhythm. Posting more is not automatically better.

If you need a place to manage enquiries, start with a spreadsheet. Move to a CRM such as Attio when conversations and follow-ups become hard to keep straight. Record only information you need and agree a clear next step.

For business-to-business outreach, prospecting tools such as Apollo can help organise research and follow-up. Define who is a good fit, check each record and write an honest message. Follow the rules for your market, give people a way to decline and honour it.

6. Keep the next step small

Your first milestone is not a polished brand or a large feature list. It is a clearer picture of the customer, evidence about the problem and a small test that teaches you something.
